Electronic muscle stimulators are low-voltage electrical devices designed to temporarily tone and strengthen muscles. While there have been few studies pointing to the overall effectiveness of an electronic muscle stimulator exercise regimen, the devices are commonly used by physical therapists treating sports injuries. According to the Food and Drug Administration, improper use of unregulated muscle stimulators has been linked to shocks, burns, skin irritations, bruising, and interference with pacemakers and other important medical devices. However, after a careful review of the product instructions, practically anyone can safely utilize their electronic muscle stimulator.
Step 1
Consult the literature or packaging that came with your electronic muscle stimulator. Ensure that the product has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration for recreational use and displays the "FDA" logo. Locate any instructions for assembly and use in the product literature.
Step 2
Ensure that the unit has been completely assembled and test the machine by locating the power switch on the battery unit. Notice if any electric vibration or current appears to be coming through the electrodes of the device. Turn off the power, and make sure the foam-backed electrodes have been plugged into the battery unit and that the proper batteries are in the battery compartment.
Step 3
Sit down in a comfortable chair or seating area and remove clothing from the muscle group that you intend to exercise. If targeting the abdominal muscles, remove or roll up your shirt and place the adhesive surface of the electrodes directly to the skin over your abdominals. Place each electrode so that they rest on different muscle areas at an equidistant location; for instance, if your device comes with four electrodes, form a square over your core abdominal muscles.
Step 4
Turn on the machine to the lowest setting and feel for muscle contractions underneath the electrodes. Turn off the machine and reposition the electrodes until you discover the placement that causes the most contraction from the low-wattage current.
Step 5
Continue the electronic muscle stimulation workout for 10 to 15 minutes as desired. Turn off the machine and select a different muscle group and re-apply the electrodes as instructed. Turn off the machine when finished and store in a dry, safe location where children or animals touch it.
Tips and Warnings
- While some electronic muscle stimulators require the tips of the electrodes to be slightly wet before turning on the machine, do not add water to the electrodes until you are certain that the advice is FDA-approved and specifically mentions it in the instruction manual. Always make sure that the desired exercise area has been fully cleaned of any dirt or oils before attaching the stimulator.
- Immediately discontinue the muscle stimulation if you experience any shooting pains, shocks or other negative symptoms. Never attempt to lift heavy objects while undergoing a stimulator session, as your muscles will be weaker than they normally would be. Consult a physician if you are unsure of the safety of your electronic muscle stimulator.
