Miami, Florida, is a top destination for tourists, with its many activities and attractions that encourage a healthy and active lifestyle. Fortunately for those seeking to visit Miami, there are many activities that can be done for free, so those traveling on a budget won't have to break their bank accounts and can still enjoy the city's activities.

Beaches

Miami beaches are open year-round and are free to access, with many even having free nearby parking. Miami beaches are a great way to enjoy the city for free with castle-building competitions, sports activities and nature trails. The Miami Beach Central Beach has free access volleyball courts as well as walking trails, and the Oleta River State Park has biking routes, picnic zones and fishing-permitted zones.

Free Sports

The City of Miami Parks and Recreation Department has organized free sports activities such as baseball games, aerobic classes and cardio classes that are open to Miami locals and travelers. The Bayfront Park of Miami offers free yoga sessions every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. Classes take place at the Tina Hill Pavilion at the southern tip of the park and begin at 6 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays and 9 a.m. on Saturdays. The classes are taught by certified yoga instructors and are on a first-come first-serve basis.

Waterworks

Miami has many water activities and attractions that encourage a healthy and active lifestyle that visitors and residents can enjoy for free. Diving in Miami doesn't have to break your bank, with many dive spots being free for access. The Biscayne National Park has several snorkeling and scuba diving spots as well as tropical fish and coral reef habitats that can be accessed for free. The park also hosts a free program called the Family Fun Fest, which takes place on the second Sunday of each month. It features guided tours of the dive spots and the natural reserves.

Take a Walk

Miami has a rich and thriving history that can be seen by strolling the city through any number of the historical districts. Miami's historical department and Miami Design Preservation League offer suggested walking tours that locals and tourists can embark on for free. Walking tours include viewing the downtown Miami district or the Art Deco district. The Art Deco Gift shop rents iPods for a minimal fee that provide guided tours in four languages.

Take a Hike

Miami has many hiking trails and routes that can be accessed for free. With more than 10,000 acres of natural reserve managed by the city's park and recreation department, there are enough hiking trails around Miami to accommodate any level hiker. The Everglades National Park of Miami has easy to moderate trails that vary in length, and the Big Cypress National Preserve of Miami has a 9.3-mile trail that requires walking through water and marshes with a top elevation of 10 feet.
