Bitter Orange
Bitter orange, also known as citrus aurantium or synephrine, is an herbal extract harvested from the fruit or peel of the bitter orange, also known as the Seville orange. It is a central nervous system stimulant and has been touted as an alternative to the banned herbal ingredient Ma huang, also known as ephedra. The Mayo Clinic cautions that because it increases heart rate and blood pressure, bitter orange may present serious health risks.
Kelp
Another means of addressing a slow metabolism is by stimulating the thyroid gland, which secretes hormones that play an important role in metabolism. Kelp, a kind of seaweed, has been shown to activate production of these hormones, according to VitaminsToHealth.com. Kelp also contains iodine, which is thought to increase the body's resting metabolism. For those who are sensitive to caffeine and other stimulants, natural thyroid boosters such as kelp may be preferable.
