The common cold has no known cure. Caused by many types of viruses, colds usually last four to seven days, reports the University of Maryland Medical Center. Colds can lead to sinus problems if the mucus backs up in the nasal passageways and is not eliminated. The average adult has two to four colds a year, but these can be reduced by boosting the immune system. Natural treatments have been shown to shorten the duration of colds and also to reduce pain and inflammation.
Vitamin C
Vitamin C, or ascorbic acid, helps reduce symptoms of a cold, according to the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University. In its role as an antioxidant, vitamin C protects cells from damage by free radicals, substances which damage cells. Vitamin C affects the immune system as well. It is a component of collagen, which is part of the makeup of blood vessels, ligaments and bone. Vitamin C also helps regenerate vitamin E, another useful vitamin for preventing colds. The Linus Pauling Institute recommends 500 mg a day dosage of vitamin C for adults based on research that showed that this dosage resulted in a 66 percent lower risk of contracting colds. Good sources of vitamin C are citrus fruits and fruit juices, and nutritional supplements.
Echinacea
Echinacea can stimulate the body's immune system, reports the College of Health and Human Sciences at Oregon State University. Echinacea is a member of the daisy family. The plant was traditionally used by Native American to treat colds. It is the most widely sold botanical in the United States, and is readily available as a tea, tincture or in capsule form.
Goldenseal
Goldenseal, or Hydrastis canadensis, has been shown to help maintain normal mucus production, reports the College of Health and Human Sciences at Oregon State University. Using this herb in the winter may help prevent sinus problems. Mucus is important to help eliminate toxins from the blood, and goldenseal helps this process by encouraging the production of nasal mucus. Goldenseal is available as a tincture or in capsules, and can also be drunk as a tea.
