Oregano and thyme oils are two of the most common oils used in combating colds and upper respiratory infections. According to studies cited in the University of Maryland Medical Center, thyme consumption has been linked to treating acute bronchitis and chronic cough conditions, while oregano oil has been repeatedly used as a home remedy for its antiseptic and antioxidant qualities. Used in careful conjunction, thyme and oregano oil can help stave off the effects of seasonal allergies and colds.

Step 1

Pour one cup of purified water into the drinking glass, and carefully add one to two drops of oregano essential oil. Stir the water with a spoon, and drink the beverage once a day in the morning or before going to bed.

Step 2

Dilute one part of thyme essential oil per three parts of extra virgin olive oil for a topical mixture. Apply the diluted oil to the chest, throat and nose in order to access the respiratory-promoting benefits of the thymol compound found in thyme essential oil. Let the oil work topically overnight and in the morning before starting your day.

Step 3

Perform a steam inhalation by boiling two to three cups of water in a pot and adding three to five drops of either oregano essential oil or thyme essential oil. It is advisable not to mix the two oils. For increased potency, include five to seven drops of eucalyptus essential oil to aid in soothing nasal inflammation and eliminating mucus.

Step 4

Remove the pot from the burner and inhale the essential oil steam emerging from the pot with deep nasal breathing. For best results, drape a towel over your head to ensure that most of the healing steam is directed to your nose.

Step 5

Create an essential oil bathing regimen two times a week wherein you add two to five drops of oregano essential oil or thyme essential oil to a warm bath. Stir the heated bath water with your hand to ensure that the essential oil is thoroughly mixed, and soak in the bath for 15 to 20 minutes.

Tips and Warnings

  • Whenever you utilize essential oil for topical healing purposes, always remember: a little goes a long way. Feel free to reduce the recommended dosages if you feel a slight irritation to the essential oils, or contact your doctor before undergoing an essential oil treatment.
  • Never take thyme essential oil internally. Pregnant women as well as children below the age of 15 should also abstain from taking oregano essential oil internally. If you begin to experience an allergic reaction to either of the essential oils, stop your essential oil treatment and contact your personal physician.
