People with wavy or curly hair may be inclined to try anything to obtain straight hair. Depending on your hair length and desired result, there are a variety of safe ways to straighten hair. Some methods are temporary and must be repeated daily, while other more costly options are longer lasting.
Creams
According to the Beauty Brains website, there are many over-the-counter hair creams that can help straighten hair. Many of these products contain oily ingredients like lanolin, petrolatum and mineral oil. Silicone creams work similarly but contain cyclomethicone and dimethicone instead of oils. Hair strengthening creams are non-damaging and safe for all hair types. Although effective, these creams may cause hair to feel greasy.
Keratin
Keratin, a protein that is found naturally in human hair, can help smooth and straighten hair. When used with the Brazilian Hair straightening treatment, keratin is a safe alternative to harsh chemical strengtheners. This treatment, which seals keratin inside the hair follicle using a flat iron, is supposed to crystallize the protein on your hair. It is non-damaging and can last up to four months. Keratin applications must be applied in a salon and can cost up to $600.
Relaxer
Chemical relaxers break down the chemical bonds found in curly hair and straighten it. Although kits can be purchased for home use, the Kid's Health website warns against using relaxers that contain lye. Lye can cause hair breakage and irritation to the skin. Relaxers are long lasting and can be repeated every six weeks. To minimize damage, avoid blow-dryers and hair dyes.
Blow Dryer
A blow dryer and brush can be used to straighten hair daily. The water and heat from the blow dryer work together by altering the chemical bonds found in the proteins of the hair fibers. It is similar to the way an iron smooths wrinkles from clothes.
This method is effective and relatively easy to do on your own. However, it is much easier for a professional stylist to do it for you. Although the heat can be damaging, your hair will feel more natural than if you had used a straightening cream or styling product.
