Dark circles under the eyes can make your entire face look tired and may cause you to feel self-conscious about your appearance. Causes of the dark circles can range from heredity to a lack of sleep.

Apply Cold

Apply cold spoons, ice, washcloths or cucumber slices to your eyes for about five minutes to help reduce the puffiness often associated with dark circles. The cold helps constrict the blood vessels while reducing the darkness under the eyes, according to the Natural Eye Care website. The cold can also soothe the eye area. The cold treatment works with a concealer for a better result.

Moisturize

Moisturizer helps create a proper base for concealing dark circles. Choose a facial moisturizer that isn't greasy. Greasy moisturizers settle into creases, which can emphasize them. Storing your moisturizer in the refrigerator adds a cool, soothing feel upon application and helps reduce puffiness around the eyes. Dab the moisturizer gently under the eye with the tip of your finger, starting at the inner corner. The skin under the eyes is thin, so apply moisturizer and makeup gently.

Choosing Concealer

A yellow-based concealer is recommended for concealing dark circles under the eyes, according to AyurHelp, an Ayurvedic health website. Yellow is a contrasting color to the blues and purples that usually cause the dark circles. For black or blue circles under the eyes, choose concealer that is a shade lighter than your normal skin tone. Concealer that is a shade darker than your skin color works best if you also have puffiness.

Applying the Concealer

A thin layer of concealer works best for dark circles. Start at the inner corner of the eye and work outward. "Real Simple" magazine recommends dotting the concealer under the eye with a makeup brush. Give the concealer a few minutes to warm up from your body heat, then gently blend the concealer in with a fingertip. Translucent powder over the concealer reduces shine while keeping the concealer in place.
