Colon cancer is a type of cancer that forms in the rectum or large intestine. According to MedlinePlus, colon cancer usually begins as noncancerous polyps, originating in the glands that line the intestines. MedlinePlus also notes that there's some evidence that lifestyle choices increase a person's risk of developing colon cancer, including a high-fat, low-fiber diet with high consumption of red meat; alcohol consumption; and smoking cigarettes.

Change in Bowel Habits

One of the first signs of colon cancer is a change in regular bowel habits, according to MayoClinic.com. Unusual diarrhea or constipation can occur. A change in the consistency of the stool for more than a couple of weeks constitutes a change in bowel habits and should be discussed with a medical professional. Another warning sign is blood in the stool or rectal bleeding, although blood in the stool is often invisible.

Discomfort

Abdominal pain and discomfort are also symptoms of colon cancer, according to MayoClinic.com Gas and cramping are common, especially if the colon is obstructed by a cancerous tumor blocking the normal path of the digestive tract. Tenderness in the abdominal area can occur in colon cancer. Also, some patients experience a feeling as if the bowel never completely empties.

Weight Loss

Colon cancer may also present with unintentional weight loss, according to MedlinePlus. Chronic diarrhea in colon cancer causes a decrease in nutrient absorption and may be the cause of weight loss. Also, appetite may be low, causing a decreased intake. Anemia, or low levels of iron in the blood may occur if the colon cancer causes bleeding, and this can also be associated with decreased intake and weight loss.
