The first step to treating dry hair may include some changes to your general hair care practices. Wash your hair less frequently, perhaps just once or twice a week, recommends Medline Plus, a website affiliated with the National Institutes of Health. This can prevent cleansing agents from stripping away your natural oils. Avoid blow dryers, curling or flattening irons and hot rollers, which all can take a toll on your hair.
Olive Oil and Rosemary
Heat 1/4 cup olive oil just until it is warm to the touch. Add 5 drops rosemary essential oil and mix well. Massage as much of this mixture as needed into your scalp, put on a shower cap, and allow the oils 15 to 20 minutes to penetrate your hair and scalp. Then shampoo your hair. You may repeat this treatment weekly as needed to nourish and protect your hair from the elements. The olive oil and rosemary solution will keep for up to a month, provided you store it away from sunlight.
Avocado and Coconut Conditioner
Combine foods with a naturally high fat content for a homemade moisturizing hair conditioner. Mash half an avocado and mix it with an egg yolk. Stir in enough coconut milk to form a smooth mixture that you can massage into your scalp, allowing the oils to penetrate the hair shaft. Rinse your hair in cool water. Repeat weekly as desired to restore hair moisture and shine.
Mayonnaise
Vinegar and eggs, two of the main ingredients in mayonnaise, are common ingredients in at-home hair treatments. The egg moisturizes your hair, while the vinegar helps to remove product buildup, restoring your hair's natural shine. Apply about a half cup of mayonnaise or as much as needed for the length of your hair. Work the mayo into dry hair, cover your head with a plastic bag or shower cap and allow it to sit for 15 minutes. Rinse your hair in lukewarm water and then shampoo it as you normally do.
