Although symptoms of adult acne are generally less severe than teenage acne, mature skin is inclined to be dry and may be more sensitive to the harsh ingredients found in some topical treatments. Essential oils contain anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and healing agents that may help to reduce the symptoms of adult acne and improve the appearance of scars. Consult with an herbalist before ingesting or using any essential oil.

Frankincense Essential Oil

Frankincense essential oil is a steam-distilled product extracted from the resin of the frankincense tree. A common ingredient in cosmetics and perfumes, the therapeutic properties of frankincense oil are well known. Historically, frankincense was prescribed as a treatment for infections and skin disorders, and was used to speed healing and reduce scarring from cuts and wounds. The antiseptic, cicatrisant and cytophylactic properties of frankincense prevent infection, fade scars and promote the regeneration of skin tissue. Frankincense can be applied directly to the skin or mixed with a few drops of walnut or grape-seed oil for an effective skin treatment.

Helichrysum Italicum Essential Oil

Native to the Mediterranean and primarily grown in Italy, France and Spain, Helichrysum italicum essential oil is considered to be one of the most healing essential oils. Used throughout Europe for centuries, Helichrysum is valued for its emollient properties that help to retain moisture and prevent hydration. It is also used to rejuvenate skin cells and treat old and new scars. According to the Organic Facts website, Helichrysum neutralizes the affects of caffeine and nicotine and detoxifies the liver, which may help to prevent breakouts. Helichrysum is generally nontoxic; however, anticoagulant properties may interfere with blood thinners.

Rose-Hip Seed Essential Oil

Rose-hip seed oil is extracted from the seed of the Rosa moschata, a wild-growing rosebush native to Chile. Rose-hip oil is valued for its high content of nonsaturated fatty acids and unique concentration of retinol, or vitamin A, which may be the basis for its healing properties. According to Botanical.com, studies conducted by the University of Santiago suggest rose-hip seed oil is an effective treatment for skin-related problems, heals eruptions and minimizes the appearance of acne scars. The oil also improves skin elasticity and skin tone. To minimize scar tissue, aromatherapist Victoria Edwards, of Fair Oaks, California, recommends a daily application of an essential oil blend made up of 1 oz. rose-hip seed oil, 1 oz. rose oil and two drops helichrysum.
