Horseback riding is a popular activity in any naturally beautiful locale and the area around scenic Helen is no different. Helen is located about two hours north of Atlanta in the stunning North Georgia Mountains and sits just on the edge of the Chattahoochee National forest. Horseback riders young and old can enjoy a pleasant ride at one of several stables located near Helen.
Short Trail Rides
Area stables, such as the Sunburst and Chattahoochee Stables in Helen and the Brasstown Valley Resort & Spa in nearby Young Harris, offer trail rides ranging from one to two hours. Most rides include trails through the nearby Chattahoochee National Forest and feature both cool, under canopy segments and breathtaking mountain views. Field rides and forest rides are available. The stables can accommodate both experienced and inexperienced riders, though some trails and mounts are restricted to those with experience.
Lunch Rides
Some area stables offer three- to four-hour rides that include a stop for lunch at a scenic overlook, river, clearing, historic landmark or other fun location. Lunch is included and may be picnic-style or catered. Longer rides often provide time to see much of North Georgia's wildlife, such as birds, small mammals, deer and possibly even bear. The lunch rides are specialties of both Sunburst Stables and Golden City Corrals in nearby Dahlonega.
Day Trips
Several stables offer day trips that combine trail rides with other activities, such as swimming, tubing or kayaking. The many waterfalls and lakes of the Chattahoochee National Forest are popular destination spots for such trips. The trip usually includes at least one meal. Some locations offer options for adding meals or for extending your stay at a local cabin for an added fee. Both the Sunburst Stables and the Brasstown Valley Resort & Spa offer day trips near Helen.
Sunset Rides
Sunset rides are a popular offering of the Sunburst Stables in Helen. Riders follow a trail to a scenic location where they dismount and relax while they enjoy the view of the sun setting over the mountain. Because the return trips occur after sunset, these rides are usually restricted to those with riding experience.
Summer Camps
Sunburst Stables near Helen offer summer camps for kids ages eight to 15. Riding classes include instruction in basic riding techniques and safety procedures. Advanced classes may include jumping. Campers also enjoy mock polo, trail riding and other games and learn how to groom, feed and care for horses. The camp includes other activities such as swimming, kayaking or fishing. Campers can earn horsemanship badges for Girl Scouts or Boy Scouts. Sunburst Stables offer a one-week camp that can be extended for a second week.
Wagon Rides
Those that aren't quite sure about mounting a horse, but still want to enjoy an equine activity can choose a horse-drawn wagon ride instead. Some rides include lunch or dinner, either catered or over an open fire. Wagon ride rates vary significantly due to the number of additional activities available in conjunction with the ride. Wagon rides are a specialty of Golden City Corrals.
