Weight-loss spas, or health spas, are a new trend in spa facilities that offer a combination of nutrition, exercise and relaxation techniques for the promotion of fat-oxidation. Usually providing on-site nutritionists and physiologists, weight-loss spas offer programs of a week to 10 days and advertise considerable weight reduction among clients looking for the right setting to burn off extra calories. When looking for weight-loss spas in your area, remember that not all spas are geared toward losing weight. By selecting the right health spa for your budget and dedicating yourself to the spa program regimen, practically anyone can see a quick reduction in his body weight.

Step 1

Tally up a working budget that includes your vacation savings fund, as well as any extra funds you can put toward a weight-loss spa vacation. As of 2010, average health spa rates begin at $1200 a week and can extend to $8000 a week or more. Create a final budget, including travel expenses, and select a weight-loss spa that you enjoy from your local travel agency or online resources such as Spa Index or Spa Finder.

Step 2

Request a nutrition and exercise physical upon beginning your weight-loss spa program. Ask the spa attendant if an on-staff physiologist is available to calculate your total body-mass index, blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

Step 3

Begin your weight-loss spa regimen by following the prescribed diet and exercise schedule given by your spa. Remain faithful to your particular spa's program and ask questions of the staff doctors or physical trainers. Ensure that you maintain a healthy hydration level throughout the day during exercises.

Step 4

Track your progress by weighing yourself every evening before bed and recording your total weight. Consult a staff member if you have questions about how many calories you must burn to create a calorie deficit with your diet. Use an activity calculator or calories-burned chart, such as the ones available at the Mayo Clinic or NutriStrategy websites, and compare the total number of calories burned through your daily activities to the amount of calories eaten in your meals.

Step 5

Set and meet your weight loss goals for the spa period. Determine a reasonable goal, such as losing 5 to 8 pounds during your week at the spa. Adopt into your regular life any nutrition or exercise routines that you engage in during your spa stay, including reducing your intake of high-fat foods and eating more whole grains and leafy green vegetables.

Step 6

Calculate your body-mass index, blood pressure and cholesterol levels to compare your state of health upon entering the spa with your health upon leaving. Ask the staff physiologists which exercises they recommend for daily practice on your own after the spa and faithfully follow the exercise routine to continue managing your weight in your daily life.

Tips and Warnings

  • Take time in selecting the right health spa for your particular needs and budget. Assess the different specialties of certain health spas: blood pressure or calorie burning, for instance, and make an educated decision on which spa would benefit your body the most.
  • Consult your personal physician before beginning a spa regimen that involves eating and exercise habits that differ drastically from your normal practice.
