Milk thistle is an herb that has been used for thousands of years for a variety of medicinal purposes. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, milk thistle is available in liquid extract, in tea form, as a dried herb or in capsule form. It is rich in a compound called silymarin, which provides health benefits to different parts of the body.

Description

Super Milk Thistle is a specific type of milk thistle supplement in capsule form, made by Enzymatic Therapy. The Enzymatic Therapy package of Super Milk Thistle states that one capsule has 100 mg of milk thistle, along with other ingredients like artichoke leaf extract, dandelion extract and licorice extract, which are designed to support liver health.

Benefits

The University of Maryland Medical Center states that milk thistle can help to reduce the effects of viral hepatitis and slow down the progression of liver disease from alcohol. The University even states that people with cirrhosis or other liver diseases live longer when they supplement with milk thistle. Milk thistle may also be able to slow down tumor growth and reduce cancer risk, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. The benefits of Super Milk Thistle and its additional ingredients beyond milk thistle have not been scientifically studied.

Dosing

Enzymatic Therapy recommends taking one capsule of Super Milk Thistle, two to three times a day. The University of Maryland Medical Center recommends doses of anywhere from 280 to 450 mg of milk thistle per day for therapeutic effects. Therefore, taking two to three capsules of Super Milk Thistle a day may or may not be adequate.

Interactions

Milk thistle is generally safe, but it is not right for everyone since it can interact with medications. The University of Maryland Medical Center explains that milk thistle can reduce the effectiveness of drugs used to treat high cholesterol, blood thinners and anti-anxiety medications. Additionally, it may interact dangerously with antipsychotic medications and seizure medications. It's wise to talk to your doctor before taking any supplements, especially if you take any medications, supplements or other herbs already.

Side Effects

Even in people who do not take any medications, milk thistle may cause side effects. The National Center for Complimentary and Alternative Medicine states that milk thistle has a laxative effect in some people, causing diarrhea, gas, bloating and stomach cramps. Some people may experience allergic reactions such as wheezing or rashes after taking Super Milk Thistle as well.
