According to RX List, cetirizine is the over-the-counter allergy medication more commonly known by the brand name, Zyrtec. Because you do not need a prescription for cetirizine, it is available at most neighborhood drugstores. Medline Plus reports that cetirizine is used to achieve temporary relief from allergy symptoms and is not a cure for allergies. Possible side effects of cetirizine may include drowsiness, dry mouth, stomach pain, vomiting, and diarrhea. As with any new medication, consult with your physician before taking cetirizine to make sure it is the right drug for you.

Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis

RX List reports that cetirizine may be used to treat seasonal allergens like ragweed, grass, and tree pollens in adults and children ages 2 years and older. Seasonal allergens are ones that only occur at a particular time of the year. Symptoms of seasonal allergies may include sneezing, runny nose, nasal itching and red, itchy eyes.

Perennial Allergic Rhinitis

According to RX List, cetirizine may be used to treat perennial allergens like dust mites, animal dander, and molds in adults and children ages 6 months and older. Perennial allergens are allergens that are present throughout the year. Symptoms of a perennial allergy are similar to the symptoms of a seasonal allergy but occur throughout the year rather than at specific times of the year. Such symptoms may include sneezing, runny nose, post nasal discharge, nasal itching, and itchy, red eyes.

Chronic Urticaria

RX List reports that cetirizine is used to treat chronic, or ongoing, outbreaks of hives and red, itchy skin of unknown origin. Adults and children ages 6 months and older may take cetirizine for skin irritations of this type. Cetirizine may reduce the occurrence, severity and duration of the hives and itchy skin. According to Medline Plus, Cetirizine may treat, but does not prevent, hives or other allergic skin reactions.
