Breast cancer is the most prevalent cancer in the United Kingdom. Breast cancer is also the second largest cause of cancer death for women in the United Kingdom.

Prevalence

In 2008, approximately 500,000 women in the United Kingdom had a breast cancer diagnosis, representing 2 percent of the total female population.

Incidence

In 2007, the number of new breast cancer cases diagnosed in the United Kingdom was 45,972. Over 99 percent of the individuals diagnosed were women.

Mortality

In 2008, 12,116 deaths occurred from breast cancer. Ninety-nine percent of the individuals were women.

Survival

The 5-year survival rate for breast cancer in Britain for those diagnosed from 2001 to 2006 was 82 percent. For Scotland, the 5-year survival rate for breast cancer patients diagnosed from 2000 to 2004 was 78 percent.

Lifetime Risk

In 2009, the lifetime risk for breast cancer in the United Kingdom was 1 in 9 for women and 1 in 1,014 for men.
