The shape of the hair follicle determines whether your hair will grow straight or curly. If you have curly hair, your hair grows from an elongated, oval shaped follicle that guides the hair out of the scalp at a sharp angle. Curly hair tends to be dryer in nature than straight hair, and more prone to frizz. Some basic styling tips and the right hair products can turn curly frizzy hair into brilliantly shiny, flowing ringlets.

Restore Moisture

Beauty expert Diana Dudas G.C.H.S.R.H. explains that a lack of moisture causes curly hair to frizz. The use of a shampoo containing humectants can help restore the moisture. Humectants attract moisture and work with the natural oils in your hair and scalp. In addition to the use of a humectant shampoo, a conditioner containing wheat, corn or rice proteins will help improve porosity and elasticity, reducing frizz. Washing every day strips your hair of moisture. If your hair is curly and frizzy, try washing every other day or even every third day.

Skip the Blow Dryer

Drying curly hair with a blow dryer can cause dryness and frizz, especially when set to a high heat setting. Allowing your hair to air dry will enhance your curls and cut down on frizz. Blot your hair with a towel after washing and conditioning; do not rub. Give your hair a light spritzing with a leave in conditioner and allow your curls to dry naturally. If you are in a rush and must dry your hair with a blow dryer, celebrity hairstylist David Evangelista suggests setting the blower to the lowest heat setting and attaching a diffuser.

The Pomade Solution

Calm frizzy curls with a pomade after washing. Pomades are waxy to the touch, giving frizzy curls a sleek, glossy look. Hairfinder reports that pomades are available beauty salons and pharmacies. Pomades that contain a conditioner can even add moisture to frizzy locks. Place a dime-sized amount in the palm of your hand and distribute it evenly through your damp hair, twisting each curl for more definition. Choose an alcohol-free pomade to prevent unwanted dryness.
