Dust mites are typically found in beds and your mattress may have anywhere from 10,000 to 10 million mites inside of it, according to the Environment, Health and Safety Online website. Although in most people dust mites may not pose a problem, individuals allergic to them may experience symptoms, such as watery eyes, runny nose, wheezing and eczema. Although the chemicals benzyl benzoate or tannic acid may reduce dust mites, you can find natural remedies as well.

Control Humidity

According to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, reducing humidity levels by 50 percent reduces the amount of dust mites in all areas of the home. Dust mites thrive in humid conditions. In the summer months, if you have an air conditioning unit in your bedroom, it can reduce the amount of humidity in the room. Dust mites also flourish in warmer temperatures above 70 degrees F. During the winter months, humidity levels may be controlled with the use of a dehumidifier.

Launder Bedding

Once a week, all bedding materials should be washed in hot water. This removes any dust mites residing in the bedding. Avoid bedding with down and feather fillings. Synthetic fibers used in bedding materials reduce the amount of dust mites found there. Wash any other materials that the dust mites may reside in, including curtains found in the bedroom.

Clean Carpets

Vacuum any carpets in the bedroom as well as around the base of the bed. The vacuum that you use should have a high efficiency filter with the ability to remove dust mites states the Environment, Health and Safety Online website. Ideally, keep carpet out of the bedroom and replace with wood flooring options.

Mattress Covers

A plastic mattress cover can prevent dust mites from collecting on your bed. Each day, use a moistened wash cloth to wipe down the plastic cover.
