Vaginal odor is a normal part of everyday life, but if the odor increases, it may be a sign of an underlying issue. Bacterial overgrowth, caused from vaginal infections or sexual intercourse, are the most common reasons for vaginal smells. Bacterial vaginosis is the infection that causes the majority of vaginal odors, according to the MayoClinic.com. You can cure vaginal odors at home, but home remedies are not a substitute for medical treatment; consult with your health care provider to discuss any potential risks.

Hygiene

Washing the vaginal area daily with mild soap and warm water is the first step in reducing vaginal odors. If you currently wear nylon underwear, change to cotton. Cotton underwear allows air to reach the vaginal area, thus reducing the moisture that causes the increase in bacterial growth.

During your menstrual cycle, change your tampon or pads frequently. If you notice an increase in odor while using pads, you can try changing to tampons. When you use sanitary pads, the discharge can adhere to the skin instead of being trapped in the pad, which increases the potential for odor. In addition, trimming your pubic region eliminates additional area for discharge or bacteria to collect.

Herbs

Garlic and tea tree oil have antifungal properties that may reduce vaginal odors caused by vaginal infections. A study done in 2003 by the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Washington concluded that tea tree oil and garlic showed potential in the treatment of vaginitis; however, additional research is needed.

If using garlic, you can make a paste and apply it to the vaginal area, or tie a clove of garlic and insert it into your vagina. When using tea tree oil, you need to dilute a few drops with a cup of water, and then you can apply it to the vaginal area. Tea tree oil is intended for external use only; do not take it orally.

Yogurt

If you love yogurt, eating plain yogurt with live cultures daily may aid in reducing vaginal odors caused from infections, or you can take an unused tampon dipped in yogurt and insert it into your vagina. In addition, the probiotics, or active bacteria, in yogurt help to prevent recurring yeast infections.

Avoid Feminine Care Products

Feminine care products that contain deodorants and perfumes may help reduce odor for a short while, but the chemicals can lead to allergic reactions, irritation and infections, according to TeenHealth at Nemours. In addition, you should avoid douching because it will wash away the normal bacteria and organisms that grow in the vagina that help keep normal acidity levels, according to the MayoClinic.com.
