While a full-term pregnancy takes 40 weeks, not all babies are as cooperative as their mommies would like them to be, and some prefer to remain in the safe and comfortable womb. For the expectant mothers, however, it is a slightly different situation, as their comfort level declines and their patience wanes towards the end of the pregnancy, so some choose natural methods of labor induction to speed the labor process up a bit.
Sex
Sexual intercourse, according to the Dr.Spock website, may help speed the labor process along. A man's prostate produces a hormone-like substance known as prostaglandins, which may help stimulate contractions. During intercourse, the semen releases these substances.
Take a Walk
Walking, while great exercise for all pregnant women, is a great option for those whose labor has not begun, but who are having contractions. The swaying of the hips helps the baby get into a delivery position, while standing upright allows gravity to move the baby into the pelvis.
Nipple Stimulation
Massaging the nipples is a natural way to release oxytocin, the natural form of the drug pitocin, which doctors sometimes use to induce pregnancy when labor is progressing too slowly or the mother is past her due date. It can be done manually or with an electric breastfeeding pump; however, this method can result in long, strong contractions that can cause the baby's heart rate to slow, therefore it is wise to speak with the doctor prior to performing this method.
Membrane Stripping
Membrane stripping, a procedure doctors perform during regular check-ups, mimics a pelvic examination. KidsHealth explains that the doctor places his gloved finger through the cervix, moving it back and forth, separating the amniotic membranes free from the uterine wall--this is the area containing the baby and amniotic fluid. This process releases prostaglandins, which may result in contractions and labor. While effective for some, this process does not work for all.
Herbs
Blue and black cohosh are herbs that may help women experiencing weak or irregular contractions, according to the Dr.Spock website. Blue cohosh helps strengthen contractions, while black cohosh helps regulate them. When taken together, they increase the efficacy of contractions, thus progressing labor. Any herbal treatment needs to be discussed with the gynecologist, as no studies are available to attest to their safety.
