Southern California weather is perfect for an all day Halloween excursion. Whether you want to take in some serious, competitive athletic activity like a race, combine some family beach athleticism with a party, or just be in motion strolling through a carnival celebration, you can find plenty of options in the Southern California area. Some of these activities begin early in the day and may require reservations or registration.
Walk or Run a Race
Burn off the calories you will later consume in treats by going to an organized walk or run. According to The Race Place, there are two events on the morning of Halloween for all ages and ability levels. In Van Nuys, you can take on the Pumpkin 5K run or 1K Spooky Fun Run for Kids. In Brentwood, you can walk or run a 5K or 10k in the annual LA Cancer Challenge and kids can participate in a fun run.
Olvera Street
Although "the Day of the Dead" is technically the day after Halloween, the festival begins each year days before Halloween in Los Angeles' oldest neighborhood. At the Olvera Street Festival, you can find activities for the kids, traditional parades, dancing and plenty of healthy, fresh food. Check the schedule to see what will be happening at any given time of the day throughout the entire festival.
Spooky Long Beach
The city of Long Beach offers two public beaches where you can swim or surf. A three-mile local bike path connects to several other paths along the shore line and running along the Los Angeles River. After taking in the beach and paths, you have plenty of options for fun in Long Beach on Halloween. Take kids to the pet parade, enjoy the annual Halloween street fair for food and drinks, or get a ticket to the annual Shipwreck Party aboard the Queen Mary.
Amusement Park Halloween
Southern California is home to more amusement parks than any other urban area in the United States. You can find Magic Mountain, Disneyland Park and Disney Resort, Universal Studios and the Knott's Berry Farm. Each park offers something unusual for Halloween visitors. Events can run during the day for kids and are covered under regular admission. Other events are for night time visitors and may require a separate admission.
Dress Up and March
For those with great costume ideas or those who like to look at the great costume ideas of others, try the West Hollywood Costume Carnaval. The annual event draws hundreds of thousands of people to West Hollywood to participate in the one mile costume march, listen to music, or just revel in the street party.
