Fastpitch softball is primarily a low-scoring game. Pitching is the dominant aspect of the game, and scores are often in the 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2 range. As a result, teams have quite a bit of pressure every time they take the field. Teams have to make plays on a regular basis in order to keep the pitcher from having to do extra work.
Three-Ball Drill
This drill is for infielders and works on the ability to get rid of the ball quickly. Line up all the infielders in their normal positions. Hit three ground balls to all players. On the first ground ball, the infielder throws to first base. On the second ground ball, the infielder throws to second base as if she were starting a double play. On the third ground ball, she throws home to mimic a play to the plate. This drill helps infielders get used to fielding hard-hit ground balls and getting rid of the ball quickly.
Bunt Drill
The bunt is a big part of softball. Batters often bunt, especially in close games. This means infielders must be alert. The first baseman and third baseman must charge in, and the second baseman and shortstop have to leave their normal positions to cover the bases. Bunt drills get infielders used to making plays on the move. Give the third baseman, first baseman and catcher three bunt plays each. Have each player throw to first, second and third base in order to get used to throwing to each base.
Relay Drill
Line up five players each along the first and third base lines. The last player should be next to the foul pole, and the other players should be spaced equally. On your signal, the catcher begins the relay by throwing to the first player down the line. The second player then wheels and throws to the third player down the line. The drill continues in this manner until the last player catches the ball. At that point, the relay reverses, and the ball goes back to home and the catcher. The team that makes all of its throws accurately without dropping the ball wins the relay. This helps defensive players get used to making secure catches and quick throws.
