Orlando, Florida, is a popular vacation destination. Aside from the well-known theme parks such as Disney World, Universal Studios and Sea World, Orlando offers mild weather and sunshine that can offer a welcome reprieve for visitors looking to escape cold winter climates. If you have a pet that you are going to take along for your visit, a variety of activities can include your family friend.
Hiking
Because of the warm weather, Orlando is ideal for hiking. There are many state and local parks that will allow you to take your pet to the trail. For instance, Cady Way Trail is a 3.5-mile paved trail where users are welcome to hike, jog or cycle along with their pets. If you are up for a drive, Wekiwa Springs State Park is 30 miles north of Orlando. Located in Apopka, Florida, the state park offers hiking, camping and swimming within the pet-friendly park grounds. Pets must be kept on a six-foot leash and not be left unattended. They are allowed on the hiking trails but not in the swimming areas.
Theme Parks
Many people visit Orlando for the theme parks, some of which offer pet-sitting services. For instance, Disney offers air-conditioned, attended pet kennels. At the Magic Kingdom, the kennels are located adjacent to the transportation and ticket center. At Epcot, Disney's Hollywood Studio and Disney's Wild Kingdom, the kennels are located next to the park entrances. There is also an additional kennel at Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground. Your pet can stay for the day, or overnight boarding is available.
At the Magic Kingdom, Epcot and Fort Wilderness, the pet-sitting fee includes two walks and two feedings per day. At Disney's Hollywood Studios and Disney's Animal Kingdom, guests are required to walk and exercise their pets two times a day.
Boating
Whether you want to charter a boat for a local lake or go searching for alligators in the swamps of Orlando, some boat companies will allow you to bring your pet or dog along for the ride. For instance, Big Toho Airboat Rides allows well-trained dogs to go along for the ride as long as they are well behaved and remain under the owner's control at all times.
Parks
Pet exercise is something that a family should plan for when bringing their pal on a trip. There are several off-leash dog parks in the Orlando area that will allow dogs to run free. One of these is Fleet Peeples Park in Winter Park, Florida, which is located just six miles from the heart of Orlando. This park sprawls over 23 acres and also offers picnic tables, a lake and a boat dock.
Town Centers
Orlando's favorable climate makes it ideal for a nighttime stroll or shopping excursion. Just outside Orlando, in the neighboring town of Kissimmee, is the Old Town shopping, dining and entertainment area. With arcade games, music, restaurants, rides and stores, Old Town provides a fun family atmosphere that welcomes leashed, under control dogs in the common areas.
