Malaria is a parasitic infection caused by one of four protozoan species of the genus Plasmodium. Chloroquine is an antimalarial drug used to prevent and treat malaria infections. However, in many parts of the world where malaria infection is prevalent, parasites such as Plasmodium falciparum have developed a resistance to chloroquine, thus new drugs must be used to fight malaria infections.

Lariam

According to Traveldoctor.info, Lariam, also known as melfloquine, is an effective antimalarial treatment in regions of the world where Plasmodium falciparum has become resistant to treatment with chloroquine. Lariam is also an alternative medication to Malarone and Doxycline, and can used as an emergency, standby treatment for a suspected malaria infection.

Doxycycline

Doxycycline is tetracyclic antibiotic used for malaria prevention and treatment. Doxcycline is prescribed as a preventative medication for malaria infection in regions where Plasmodium falciparum parasites are resistant to other drugs.

Malarone

Malarone is an antimalarial drug combination of atovaquone and proguanil. For preventative purposes, one tablet of malarone should be administered the day before traveling to a region where malaria infections are high, and treatment should be continued until seven days after departure from the malaria risk area.
