Indoor tanning lotions are important for maintaining skin health while using indoor tanning beds and stations. The ingredients found in most indoor tanning lotions are designed to keep the skin hydrated while providing maximum tanning results. There are several different types of lotions that vary in terms of whether or not they contain bronzers or ingredients that cause a hot sensation on the skin while tanning, also known as the "tingle factor."

DHA

Dihydroxyacetone, more commonly known as DHA, is described by the FDA as "a color additive that darkens the skin by reacting with amino acids in the skin's surface." DHA reacts with skin cells and amino acids in the skin to produce darker pigments with or without the help of sunlight. The FDA has approved the use of DHA in indoor tanning lotions, but it has also cautioned users to be careful not to apply to the lips and mucous membranes on the body, such as the areas around the eyes.

Tyrosine

This ingredient is a nonessential amino acid that aids in producing melanin, which is the pigment responsible for color in skin. Tyrosine can also be found in tanning pills, although tanning pills have been found to be ineffective at producing results, according to Sunless.com.

Erythrulose

Erythrulose is a ketose that reacts with the skin to form a brownish color in the skin. It offers very similar results to DHA, which is why Sunless.com recommends that people allergic to DHA try tanning lotions containing Erythrulose instead.

Hempseed Oil

Many indoor tanning lotions now contain THC-free hempseed oil. This oil is high in fatty acids, and thus is an effective ingredient for sealing in moisture and prolonging the effects of the tanning bed.

Aloe Vera

Extracts from this plant is used in many different types of lotions, including in some indoor tanning lotions. Aloe Vera is effective at treating burns and moisturizing the skin, so it works well for those with sensitive skin in need of indoor tanning lotion.

Alpha-lipoic Acid

Many indoor tanning lotions contain anti-aging ingredients, such as alpha-lipoic acid, an antioxidant that attacks free radicals that can damage skin cells. This antioxidant is produced by the body and is water and fat soluble, which is why it is absorbed well on the skin.
