Blondes, redheads and others with fair, thin skin have far less melanin protecting them from sun damage than do people with darker complexions. This means fair skin burns, dries out and shows signs of aging more quickly. Fair skin also heightens the appearance of blemishes and red blotchiness from heat, illness or allergies. Protect fair skin with moisturizing, balancing creams containing ample levels of sunblock.

Foundation Creams

Fair skin can look stunning if it is flawless, says makeup artist Lee Pycroft, as reported in the Daily Mail UK Online. Pycroft recommends a light-reflective, non-matte foundation made for the palest skin tones, such as Rimmel Renew&Lift, La Prairie Skin Caviar Concealer Foundation or Dainty Doll Foundation, which is specifically made for the palest skin, but put it on over a layer of moisturizer to avoid drying out. Use moisturizer with a sunscreen, such as Olay's Regenerist UV Defense Regenerating Lotion SPF 15, which is described by ConsumerSearch.com as the best overall facial moisturizer on the market because of its lightweight, nourishing amino peptides and antioxidants and broad-spectrum ultraviolet protection. For super-sensitive fair skin, substitute Aveeno Ultra-Calming Daily Moisturizer SPF 15 under your foundation.

Tinted Moisturizing Creams

Fair skin requires constant moisturizing to protect against drying. Lightly tinted moisturizing creams can protect fair skin while evening out skin tone. Sephora, a leading retailer of high-quality cosmetic products, suggests Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer, a very lightweight sheer formula with an SPF 20, which also comes in an oil-free formulation; Clinique Moisture Sheer Tint with SPF 15, with an easy-to-spread gel texture that is available in a very light Fair shade; and Smashbox Sheer Focus Tinted Moisturizer SPF 15, which contains citrus, honey and other soothing, nourishing ingredients, and is available in a near-pearl shade called Luminous to bring a protective, radiant glow to the most translucent of complexions.

Balancing Creams

When fair skin shows signs of aging and dryness, intensive intervention can help reverse the signs of time and damage. Pycroft recommends Palmer's Cocoa Butter Body Gloss for a drenching sheen; it can also be mixed with a pale foundation. Mac Cosmetic's Face and Body also imparts a nourishing, moisturizing glow and helps fight blotchiness. Sephora recommends Philosophy's When Hope Is Not Enough Replenishing Cream, an ultra-rich cream with antioxidants and natural oils to fight redness and improve smoothness. Remove all traces of makeup and creams from fair skin in the evening with Philosophy's Purity Made Simple; its chamomile and carrot extracts soothe fair and sensitive skin.
