Most people have an everyday skin care routine that typically consists of cleanser and moisturizer, but when a problem pops up---whether it's your first noticeable wrinkles or an unexpected acne breakout---you may want to add a mask to your routine to help clear up the problem. Masks are designed for occasional, intensive treatment, and they can significantly improve the appearance of problem skin.
Acne Fighting
If breakouts are a problem, beat them with a mask that contains oil-absorbing ingredients, like sulfur or clay. "Real Simple" magazine recommends the sulfur-based Mario Badescu Drying Mask for active breakouts, while "Fitness" magazine suggests trying the Jason Red Elements Red Clay Masque if breakouts are an issue for you. If you want to make your own acne-fighting mask, the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics recommends combining fuller's earth with tincture of benzoin and witch hazel to make a thick paste you can rub on your skin. Whatever mask you choose, you can dab it directly on active blemishes to spot treat a breakout or apply it to your entire face.
Skin Brightening
If your skin looks dull, liven it up with a brightening mask that contains moisturizing ingredients like shea butter or olive oil plus skin refreshers like vitamin C. Make your own ultra-simple mask by simply rubbing a little olive oil onto your skin before your nighttime moisturizer, suggests "Glamour" magazine. "Fitness" magazine recommends Chanel Precision Anti-Fatigue Gel Mask, which contains orange extract, sweet almond oil and glycerin. "Real Simple" magazine likes Aveda Enbrightenment Brightening Intensive Massage Masque, which fades brown spots in addition to moisturizing.
Wrinkle Reducing
To minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, opt for a mask that contains fruit enzymes---they gently rub away your skin's surface layer, revealing younger skin beneath. "Fitness" magazine recommends Alba Botanica Papaya Enzyme Facial Mask, which gets its exfoliating power from papaya. If you want to make your own wrinkle reducing mask, the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics suggests combining mashed avocado and carrot with heavy cream, honey and a beaten egg to make a super-moisturizing mask.
