Things to Do in Door County, Wisconsin

Door County, Wisconsin, is located on the eastern side of Wisconsin. Door County is actually a peninsula that juts out into Green Bay and Lake Michigan and includes Washington Island. Because of Door County's location, it is home to many outdoor activities, including biking, swimming and boating. The county also has five state parks and more than 12 county parks.

Beaches

If you want to explore the Door County beaches and take a dip in Lake Michigan or Green Bay, you have lots of options. There are public beaches all up and down the peninsula, from Sturgeon Bay in the south to School House Beach on the northern tip of Washington Island.

Hiking

With so many state and county parks, there are a multitude of hiking trails, ranging from gradual, paved trails to trails for expert hikers. For example, Peninsula State Park, located in Fish Creek on the western side of the peninsula, has both the easy, two-mile Sentinel Trail and the much more challenging Eagle Trail, which is full of steep, rocky sections.

Snowshoeing

Snowshoeing is an excellent way to explore Door County during the winter months, when the landscape is blanketed in snow. Snowshoeing lets you get some cardiovascular exercise while taking in nature. There are trails for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing throughout the county.

Golf

There are golf course all throughout Door County, and many include views of Lake Michigan and Green Bay. From Idlewood Golf Course at the southern end of Door County to Deer Run Golf Course on Washington Island, get your exercise by skipping the golf cart and walking the course.

Kayaking

You can explore the waters surrounding Door County on your own, or by taking a guided kayak tour at several places along the peninsula. For example, Door County Kayak tours offers day excursions at Cave Point, Whitefish Bay Dunes and Peninsula State Park.
