The Kinsey Institute reports that 11 percent of men and women who are living together or married have been unfaithful in the relationship. When marriage counselor M. Gary Neuman surveyed 200 men about their reasons for cheating, 48 percent of those he surveyed indicated that they were seeking emotional intimacy when they cheated. As the reasons for infidelity may vary, looking for specific changes in behavior and habits in your partner can help you confirm your suspicions that he may be cheating or thinking about cheating.
Work Habits
M. Gary Neuman's survey reported that 40 percent of the men he questioned met the other woman at work. If your man is spending more time at the office---going in early, working late and taking more business trips--this could be a sign that more than his job holds his interest at work.
Finances
Colleen Collins, a private investigator in Denver, Colorado reports that unexplained credit card charges can be a sign of cheating. If a normally solvent man suddenly has trouble paying bills, even though he's still employed and nothing else has changed, this may indicate that he's spending extra money on a mistress.
Telephone
A man who won't answer the phone when you're around could be trying to hide the caller's identity or the nature of the call, Collins reports. Unfamiliar numbers on a cell phone, secretiveness about phone conversations and callers who hang up if you answer are other reasons to be concerned about a cheating partner.
Appearance
A man who is suddenly concerned with his appearance, changes his hairstyle or buys new clothes--especially if the man wasn't concerned about these things before--could be a sign that he's met someone new he wishes to impress. But be careful to pay attention to other factors that might warrant his new look, such as a class reunion or health scare that might motivate him to get into shape.
Attitude
A man who seems distracted, secretive or guilty may be hiding an affair. Collins says sudden anger or nit-picking during normal conversations can be a sign of an affair, as if the man is trying to blame you for his straying.
Conversation
If the name of a female co-worker or new acquaintance keeps popping up in conversation, that's another sign he could be cheating, says Collins. Some people apparently can't help gushing about their new love interest---even to a wife or girlfriend.
