Colon flushing, also known as colon cleansing or detoxification, is a homeopathic remedy used to clear the lower gastrointestinal tract of feces. Flushing is accomplished either through the administration of an enema, or by orally administered herbal supplements. Proponents of colon cleansing claim that it rids the body of toxins and parasites and promise rapid weight loss as a reward for detoxification. However, the side effects associated with flushing can be serious and should be taken into careful consideration.

Dehydration

Because most orally administered colon cleansers are essentially laxatives, dehydration is a potential side effect. Dehydration occurs when the body is losing more fluids than it retains. Mild dehydration can be treated by increasing fluid intake, but moderate to severe dehydration constitutes a medical emergency. Dehydration is particularly dangerous for young children and for individuals suffering from heart or kidney disease.

Infection

The enema method for colon cleansing requires the insertion of a syringe into the rectum. An inexperienced user runs the risk of perforating the delicate lining of the rectum and developing an infection. According to the American Cancer Society, illness and even death can be the consequence of using contaminated equipment or perforating the rectum.

Drug Interactions

The herbal supplements used for colon flushing are marketed as "natural" products. However, "natural" does not mean risk-free; herbs are potent and might interact with prescription medication. In addition, since supplements are not regulated by the FDA, there is no way to ascertain the purity or potency of the supplement.

Imbalance

The gastrointestinal tract is well-equipped for handling nutritional intake and waste removal. The colon is home to a wide variety of healthy bacteria, the body's natural "flora," that assist in the digestion process. Taking colon cleansers strips away the natural flora and disrupts the body's rhythm of nutrient absorption and waste excretion. The side effects of gastrointestinal imbalance include bloating, diarrhea, cramping, constipation, dehydration, electrolyte imbalance and future dependence on laxatives for bowel movements.
