Augmentin XR is an antibiotic. It is comprised of two medications, amoxicillin and clavulanic acid. Together, these medications treat certain conditions caused by bacteria including infections of the ears, lungs, sinus, skin and urinary tract, according to PDR Health. This medication should not be used by patients with an allergy to any penicillin antibiotic. Though beneficial in clearing infections, Augmentin XR carries a risk of side effects.

Nausea and Vomiting

Augmentin XR may cause nausea and vomiting, reports Drugs.com. Taking this medication with food may help decrease gastrointestinal effects. Augmentin XR is an extended-release preparation. It should never be crushed or chewed to make swallowing or digesting easier. Those who experience difficulty swallowing pills should ask their doctor to prescribe the medication in a liquid suspension. Eating smaller meals more frequently may help to diminish nausea. Patients who experience vomiting while taking Augmentin XR should drink ample fluids throughout the day to maintain adequate hydration. Severe vomiting should be brought to the attention of a physician.

Headache

Some patients may experience headache while taking Augmentin XR. This side effect may be temporary until the body adjusts to Augmentin XR. Patients may consult their physician regarding the use of an over-the-counter pain medication such as acetaminophen for the relief of headache pain and discomfort. A headache that occurs in conjunction with visual changes, seizure and confusion should be reported to a physician.

Vaginal Yeast Infection

Women taking Augmentin XR may experience a vaginal yeast infection. Antibiotics work at killing harmful bacteria in the body, but while doing so they destroy some of the good bacteria in the body. This creates an environment susceptible to the overgrowth of yeast, or Candida. Taking a natural probiotic supplement or eating foods high in natural probiotics such as yogurt may help to prevent vaginal yeast infections. Symptoms of a vaginal infection can include vaginal pain, redness, itching and a thick white colored discharge. A vaginal yeast infection can be diagnosed and treated by a gynecologist.

Rash

According to Medline Plus, a mild skin rash may occur while taking Augmentin XR. This rash may or may not itch. Any rash should be brought to the attention of a physician who may recommend use of an antihistamine or steroid cream to relieve skin itching and discomfort. A rash that occurs in conjunction with hives, difficulty breathing or a swelling of the tongue or throat may be a sign of a severe reaction and should be brought to the attention of a doctor immediately.
