Asheville, North Carolina, is a unique place to take part in public skating. The people of downtown Asheville are typically adventurous and lively in spirit, which contributes to it being an ideal place to enjoy a rigorous hobby. Seasoned skateboarders are aware of the skate parks that might be some of the best in the Southeast. Families can also take part in rollerskating and ice skating in Asheville.
History of Skateboarding
Prior to 1997, skaters were at a subtle war with the population of Asheville who were upset from their perception that their sidewalks were corrupted with skateboards. Pedestrians, bicyclists, motorcyclists and car drivers constantly had to be on the lookout for a skateboarder flying in front of them. The issue came to resolution when a public meeting was held in 1997. Over 150 skaters met with parents, police officials, community members, and store owners to discuss the issue. They made an astute decision to allot designated space for skateboarders to practice their activity (see References 1).
Skate Parks
The agreement to designate space for skateboarders resulted in a top skate park in the Southeast, Food Lion Skate Park. The park is significantly impressive for several reasons. It is made up of 17,000 square feet of skateboarding heaven. Beginning and advanced skateboarders have feats that they can tackle, which means that it is an all-inclusive space for people interested in the activity. Beginners can skate on the four-foot bowl to gain an understanding of what moves they can accomplish. The park has a large section for intermediate skaters to enjoy working on new moves. Significantly advanced skaters can try the seven-foot bowl that only the truly experienced should try (see References 1).
Mountain Sports Festival
The skateboarding craze in Asheville inspired the community to encourage additional skateboarding activities for people to take part in and compete against each other. Founded 2001, the Mountain Sports Festival provides skateboarders and other athletes with an competition typically held in May. Community members come together, listen to entertainment and enjoy food while waiting for their friends to take part in competitions. Kids can also show their talent for skateboarding in the free Iron Kids Challenge (see References 2).
Roller Skating
Families can take part in roller skating for kids' birthdays and family reunions in Asheville. According to Tarwheels Skateway, radio station 96.5 WOXL rated Tarwheels Skateway the best place for kid's birthdays in 2010. It is the only skating rink in Asheville, which means that you might want to make reservations for your child's big day.
Ice Skating
Asheville is a unique city because it offers families and friends the opportunity to bundle up and go ice skating at the downtown Asheville Civic Center. Although there are not professional facilities for ice skating competitions, you can enjoy public ice skating sessions that are typically held throughout the week in December and January, as of 2010. Nominal fees include skate rental. There are several organic restaurants and a bookstore nearby to relax after you exert yourself ice skating.
