Those looking to save a few bucks while visiting San Francisco have plenty to do in the city for free. San Francisco beckons visitors to spend time outside, taking in the wonderful views and scenic surroundings that the vibrant city and the bay have to offer. Remember to wear a few layers of clothes since the weather can change quickly in the City by the Bay.

Parks

Spending a day at a couple of the San Francisco's parks can be a cheap, fun and educational way of experiencing the city. First, head over to the Douglass Playground Slide. You will need a piece of cardboard to sit on and a little guts to take on this mammoth concrete slide in a quiet neighborhood block. Next, go to Golden Gate Park and take a stroll around the gardens and playgrounds. Visitors can play a game of lawn bowling at the park, where there are free lessons at noon each Wednesday. Visitors can also go on a walking tour of the park, rent a boat or reserve a tennis court for the afternoon.

Stairs

Going up and down the famous stairways will give you not only some great views of the city, but a decent workout as well. Several outdoor stairways help walkers traverse the undulating landscape in the city. The best place to hit the stairs is on Laidley Street where walkers can check out the brilliantly painted houses and some of the best views of the city. Laidley Street is in the Glen Park area southwest of the downtown.

Museums, Attractions

San Francisco is rich in history and culture which includes a vibrant Chinese population, artwork, landmarks and cable cars. The Chinese Historical Society of America Museum, 650 Commercial St., is free. The museum documents the history of Chinese immigrants in America with exhibits, displays and artifacts. Grace Cathedral, 1100 California St., a famous San Francisco landmark, is open to the public and is also free. The "City's Church" is known for its French Gothic architecture. Another free attraction that will give tourists a great feel for the city is the San Francisco Cable Car Museum, 1201 Mason St. Visitors can get an up-close look at the evolution of the cable car, San Francisco's famous mode of public transportation.

Beaches

Do not forget that San Francisco is on the water, which makes its beaches worthy places to hang out and lose a day for free. The Ocean Beach, which is made up of the Sutri Bath ruins and 3 miles of sand, is a decent place to get some rays and people watch. The best location of swimming is China Beach at 28th Avenue and Sea Cliff.

Sailing

The Cal Sailing Club offers free sailboat rides one Sunday afternoon a month, typically from 1 to 4 p.m. After the 20-minute jaunt around the San Francisco Bay, participants can enjoy a barbecue. The club requests a $5 donation for the meal.

Twin Peaks

Head to Twin Peaks where the views of the city are memorable. These two hill tops which are 922 feet tall are southwest of downtown. On a sunny day, visitors can enjoy clear views of the city and the bay. On a foggy day, visitors will get dramatic views of the fog rolling in off of the water. To get there, take Market Street southwest.
