Back hair is more often a problem for men than for women. In addition to being aesthetically displeasing for many people, back hair can trap heat and increase body odor. Fortunately, several effective hair removal options for back hair are available that vary in cost and range from temporary to permanent.
Shaving
Shaving is an affordable and quick way to remove back hair, although the results rarely last more than a day or two. As the hair grows back, itching and irritation may develop. Shaving back hair may also lead to ingrown hairs and razor bumps, especially if done on dry skin or without proper preparation. To prevent ingrown hairs and reduce irritation, the Nemours Foundation recommends shaving back hair during or after a shower so that the warm water can soften the hair. Always use a sharp blade and shaving gel or cream. If you are unable to reach upper-back hair, ask a friend or family member to help you.
Waxing
Waxing offers a longer-lasting solution for back hair than shaving, but the process costs more and can be painful, especially for those with sensitive skin. Results typically last for several weeks, according to Columbia University, and your hair may grow back thinner and softer after each waxing. Waxing back hair is difficult without the help of a friend, but many salons offer the service on a walk-in basis.
Cream Depilatories
Cream depilatories work by softening and dissolving body hair so that it washes away after five or 10 minutes of contact. They are a good choice if you suffer from ingrown hairs, but Planned Parenthood states that they are more likely than shaving to irritate sensitive skin. Depilatory creams may also worsen or cause acne breakouts in people prone to body or back acne. Most retail stores and pharmacies carry depilatories suitable for use on the back.
Permanent Back Hair Removal
Electrolysis and laser therapy provide a permanent solution to back hair, although both options are costly and typically require multiple visits to a dermatologist. Electrolysis removes back hair via an electrical current that penetrates the hair root to destroy it and prevent hair regrowth. Laser therapy works by disabling the hair's follicle. Some hair regrowth may occur following laser therapy.
