A healthy head of hair begins with a healthy scalp, and essential oils have the power to cleanse the scalp, stimulate the hair follicles, improve circulation and even promote hair growth. If you suffer from hair loss or just want to encourage your hair to grow longer and thicker, essential oils may help. In some cases, losing hair can indicate a more serious condition such as a deficiency of the thyroid or pituitary glands.

Lavender

Lavender, one of several essential oils traditionally used to promote hair growth, has been proven effective in clinical trials. A 1998 study conducted at the Aberdeen Royal Infirmary and published in the Archives of Dermatology examined the effects of a group of essential oils on patients with alopecia areta. Lavender, rosemary, thyme and cedarwood essential oils were combined with a mixture of grapeseed and jojoba oils, and then massaged into the patients' scalps daily. A placebo group was treated with the carrier oils alone. After seven months, 44 percent of the treated patients showed marked improvement in hair growth compared with only 15 percent of patients in the placebo group.

Rosemary

Another traditional treatment for stimulating hair growth, rosemary essential oil combines well with other similar oils. It may also provide some benefit when used alone, however. In her book "The Complete Book of Essential Oils and Aromatherapy," Valerie Ann Worwood recommends combining the oil with apple cider vinegar to make a scalp massage.
Combine 30 drops rosemary oil with 4 ounces apple cider vinegar. Store in a cool, dry place when not in use. To use, dilute 1 tsp. of this mixture in 1 tbsp. ice-cold water and massage into the scalp each night before bed to promote hair growth.

Thyme

Thyme oil, a potent antiseptic and antimicrobial agent, has a strong, sweet and spicy aroma. It stimulates blood circulation and invigorates the scalp, which may contribute to its desirability in natural hair loss remedies. While often used in conjunction with other essential oils, thyme oil may also promote hair growth when used alone. Erich Keller, author of "Aromatherapy Handbook for Beauty, Hair, and Skin Care," recommends combining with aloe vera gel, another substance believed to stimulate hair growth. For the best results, mix 5 to 7 drops thyme essential oil with 1 oz. aloe vera gel, and massage into the scalp once daily.

Cedarwood

Cedarwood essential oil cleanses the scalp and hair roots. Aromatherapists often use the oil to treat dandruff and hair loss. In her book "Aromatherapy: Essential Oils for Vibrant Health and Beauty," Roberta Wilson suggests making a scalp tonic to encourage hair growth by combining 2 to 8 drops cedarwood essential oil with 1 oz. vodka or pure grain alcohol. Mix well and massage the mixture into the scalp once a day for the best results. Cedarwood also combines well with other essential oils that stimulate hair growth. Essential oils are generally considered safe for external use when properly diluted, but you should always consult a qualified physician before treating hair loss on your own.
