Alcatraz
Those looking for a bit of dark history need look no further than Alcatraz. Home to a federal penitentiary from 1943 to 1963, this rock island once housed Al Capone as one of its inmates, states Alcatraz Cruises. Day and night tours are both available. Wear good walking shoes, as the tour includes a walk-through of the infamous prison.
The Farmers Market
The Ferry Plaza Farmers Market is one of the top farmers markets worthy of a visit. Local famous chefs can be spotted purchasing items from this farmers market. It is open Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday of each week. Many of the vendors are certified organic, so foods are grown naturally and make for healthy eating. In addition to regional farm-fresh foods, artisan foods such as wood-fired pizza, cheeses and jams can be found.
Golden Gate Park
Golden Gate Park is home to a zoo, a Japanese Tea Garden and a herd of buffalo. Put on some walking/running shoes, as there are plenty of trails to explore in the more than 1,000 acres that make up this park. Take a break at the many gardens inside the park or stop by the Buffalo Paddock and imagine how the Wild West looked like with a herd of buffalo roaming the land. Many events, both free and admission only, are held at the park as well.
Golden Gate Bridge
Not to be missed is the Golden Gate Bridge. Walk this 1.7-mile landmark and be refreshed with the smells of the sea underneath. Unlike cars, pedestrians do not need to pay a toll to cross the bridge. Gates open at 5 a.m. every day of the year for pedestrians. Bicyclists have 24-hour access to the bridge. If the gates are closed, they have access to a buzzer that notifies security staff of their presence, and they will be able to remotely open the gate.
Lombard Street
Lombard Street is the most crooked street in America. Famous for its sharp curves and stately Victorian mansions, drivers line up to slowly meander down the steep road. More adventurous tourists will want to walk up and the down the street and admire the beautiful homes and flowers. These homes make up some of the most expensive pieces of real estate in all of San Francisco.
