Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDs, are used to reduce pain, fever and inflammation caused by medical conditions such as arthritis, headache, back pain, menstrual cramps and minor injuries. According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disease, people who take NSAIDs for chronic conditions are five times more likely to develop peptic ulcers. NSAID-induced ulcers are treated with acid H2 blockers, proton pump inhibitors and Cytotec.
H2 Blockers
According to the American College of Gastroenterology, NSAID-induced ulcers are treated with acid-reducing drugs known as H2 blockers. These drugs block the production of stomach acid and facilitate the healing of the ulcers. The drugs are available over the counter and as prescriptions. Examples of H2 blockers include Zantac, Pepcid, Tagamet and Axid. Common side effects of these drugs include headache, dizziness, drowsiness, constipation, diarrhea, dry mouth and difficulties urinating.
Proton Pump Inhibitors
The American College of Gastroenterology states that NSAID-induced ulcers can be treated with acid suppressing drugs known as proton pump inhibitors. Proton pump inhibitors are stronger than H2 blockers in suppressing stomach acid. Examples of proton pump inhibitors include Prevacid, Prilosec, Protonix, Nexium, Aciphex and Zegerid. Most proton pump inhibitors are available as prescriptions. Prilosec, Prevacid and Zegerid are available over the counter. Common side effects of proton pump inhibitors include headache, constipation and diarrhea.
Cytotec
According to Drugs.com, Cytotec, also known as misoprostol, is used to reduce the risk of stomach ulcers in patients who take nonsteroidal ant-inflammatory drugs for chronic conditions such as osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Cytotec is a prostaglandin that prevents stomach ulcers by protecting the lining of the stomach. Common side effects of Cytotec include diarrhea, stomach cramps, drowsiness, dizziness and blurred vision. Cytotec should not be used by pregnant women because it may cause abortion and birth defects.
