Proform Treadmill Belt Installation

Pro-Form produces a line of treadmills suitable for use in the home. The primary component of these devices is a walking belt wrapped around a pair of rollers. When the operator inputs the desired settings into the treadmill's console, the motor unit turns one of these rollers, setting the belt into motion. Over time, the belt will begin to show signs of wear and may eventually grow unsuitable for use, requiring the installation of a replacement.

Step 1

Remove the key from the treadmill's console and unplug the power cord. Locate the bolts set into the rear of each foot rail. Use an Allen wrench to turn the right bolt counterclockwise several full turns. Use the wrench to remove the left bolt completely.

Step 2

Remove the three screws securing the motor hood in place. Lift the hood upwards and remove it from the treadmill's base. Examine the top of the left side rail; if there is a cover inset into the top of the rail, remove it. Remove the screws securing the left side rail in place.

Step 3

Work the left ends of the front and rear rollers free of the treadmill. Slide the belt off of the rollers and install the replacement belt in its place. Return the left ends of the front and rear rollers to their original locations.

Step 4

Replace the screw that secures the treadmill base to the incline frame. Replace the left foot rail, the front foot rail cap and the motor hood; use the previously-removed screws to secure the cap and motor hood in place. Replace the cap over the rear end of the left foot rail.

Step 5

Insert the previously removed bolt into the hole in the cap. Turn the bolt clockwise until it catches on the hole in the rear roller. Lift the edges of the treadmill belt and apply a small amount of lubricant to the treadmill deck.

Step 6

Tighten the belt by turning the adjustment bolts clockwise; allow for about three to four inches of slack. Check the belt's alignment and make adjustments by turning the bolts clockwise or counterclockwise as needed.

Tips and Warnings

  • If the treadmill's motor is installed on the right side of the device, remove the pieces on that side instead. Some models of treadmill may require you to remove additional pieces to gain access to the belt; keep track of the parts you remove, their original location and what bolts, nuts and washers are required to secure them back in place.
