It's bad enough that the American Academy of Dermatology estimates over 40 million Americans will suffer from some form of acne within a given year, but many that suffer from acne will be left with acne scars. Home remedies can be a good alternative to store-bought or prescription treatments to treat acne marks and scars.
Bleaching
The acids within lemon juice contain natural bleaching properties. Applied to clean acne marks or acne scars with discoloration, lemon juice can lighten the acne marks and darker scars. Dab fresh lemon juice onto the marks and scars with a cotton ball or Q-tip. Leave on the skin for 10 minutes, and then rinse the lemon juice off. The American Chronicle suggests caution when using this treatment as it can make your skin more susceptible to the sun's rays.
Microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion is a technique used by dermatologists to treat shallow acne scarring. Microdermabrasion buffs the skin by removing dead skin cells and skin at the surface to reveal new skin underneath. This helps to remove scarring layer by layer. According to the American Chronicle, baking soda is used in many microdermabrasion kits and can be used on its own as a home remedy to treat acne marks and scars. Create a paste mixing one part baking soda with two parts water, and then gently massage the paste into the skin for one minute and rinse.
Superficial Chemical Peel
Chemical peels are used to slough off the top layers of skin to reveal new skin underneath. Very light acid solutions are used for superficial peels or peels that only cause the very top layers of skin to peel away. Pineapple is a naturally acidic fruit that can be pureed and applied to the face for a gentle exfoliate. Apply the puree gently and leave on for 10 to 15 minutes, then rinse. It will give your skin a glow from its brightening properties, and can help fade acne marks.
Topical Treatment
After you do a microdermabrasion or superficial chemical peel, it is important to apply a moisturizer to help soften the scar tissue and to aid the skin in the healing process. Vitamin E is an excellent source of moisture and healing agents. Aloe vera has also been used to help the skin heal, and adding vitamin E can help boost its abilities even more.
