A sudden toothache can be the cause of considerable pain. Seek professional attention for tooth pain, but if the toothache starts during the weekend, home remedies may provide temporary relief. You can find homeopathic remedies from ingredients you find in the kitchen or at the local pharmacy.
Causes
The primary cause of toothaches is decay. Oral bacteria form a plaque and produce acid that eats through the hard covering that protects the teeth--the enamel. The consequent cavity causes throbbing pain and sensitivity. According to dentist Dr. Alan Carr, other causes for toothaches include sinus infections, teeth grinding, periodontal disease and abscesses. Contact a dentist if the toothache continues for more than a few days, if it is accompanied by a fever, if there are any respiratory problems or if there are any signs of infections.
Over the Counter Remedies
The Mayo Clinic recommends taking over-the-counter pain relievers as a temporary solution. Additionally, you may apply over-the-counter antiseptics directly to the sore tooth and surrounding gum. Look for benzocaine, a local anesthetic, in the list of active ingredients.
Oil of Cloves
The main component of clove oil, eugenol, is a natural analgesic and antiseptic. Analgesic means that the oil has pain-relieving properties, while antiseptic means the oil will help prevent infection. You can purchase the oil over the counter at some pharmacies. Apply it directly to the affected tooth and surrounding gums.
Salt Water
Like clove oil, salt is a natural antiseptic. Mix 2 to 3 teaspoons of salt into lukewarm water and swish for 20 to 30 seconds. Do not use cold or hot water as the extreme temperature will aggravate the already sensitive tooth. The rinse may also dislodge food stuck between the teeth, which will relieve pressure on the affected tooth.
Diet
The painful tooth may be sensitive to temperature and diet, so avoid anything extreme. Do not drink hot coffee and iced drinks or eat sugary or spicy foods until you have received dental care. Instead, choose a soft, bland and room-temperature diet. The B.R.A.T. diet--banana, rice, applesauce and toast--may be a good option.
Peroxide
Hydrogen peroxide is another natural antiseptic. Mix 3 to 4 tablespoons of 3 percent food-grade hydrogen peroxide--obtained from the pharmacy--with an equal amount of water. Swish in the mouth for a few minutes, spit and repeat as needed.
