Essential oils are used in the holistic practice of aromatherapy to heal various physical and mental conditions and to create moods and aromatic atmospheres. You can use certain essential oils to heal many disorders of the scalp, including dry scalp conditions like dandruff and psoriasis. Be sure to consult your doctor or a qualified aromatherapist before using essential oils, especially if you have a medical condition or allergies.

Tea Tree

According to a 2003 study published in the Journal of Applied Microbiology, tea tree oil has been shown to be effective at treating dandruff, among other skin skin disorders, due to its antimicrobial properties. You can find tea tree oil in a number of over-the-counter scalp treatments. You can purchase a bottle of tea tree oil in most health and holistic healing stores. To treat dandruff, you can mix up to 10 drops of tea tree oil in your usual shampoo. You can also apply a few drops of tea tree oil to your hands and massage over your scalp prior to shampooing.

Calendula

Calendula essential oil is extracted from the pot marigold plant. According to Brigitte Mars in her book "Beauty by Nature," the essential oil of calendula can help to soothe sensitive and irritated scalps. Calendula is a fragrant and nourishing oil that may promote a healthier scalp and help conditions such as scalp psoriasis. Mix 2 tbsp. of jojoba oil with 20 drops of calendula oil. You can gently heat the mixture on the stove until it's just warm. Apply the oil to your scalp, massaging it in with circular motions, and then work it through the ends of your hair. Cover your head with a shower cap or plastic wrap for 20 to 30 minutes to allow the oil to be fully absorbed by your scalp and hair. Wash your hair as usual.

Lemon

Lemon essential oil is produced from the rind of the lemon peel. It has antiseptic and oil-controlling properties that can help to alleviate dandruff and dry, flaky scalp conditions. According to Mars, lemon oil is a hair tonic that can also help to add luster and sheen to dry or dull hair. You can give yourself a scalp massage using a few drops of lemon oil mixed in a tablespoon of olive oil. Use circular motions, as this will help to bring your scalp's natural oils to the surface and increase circulation to the hair follicles. Wash your hair as usual.
