The vibrant city of San Francisco has never been short on excitement, and the health conscious can enjoy stimulating, active events and locales. Visitors can maintain their weekly exercise routines while exploring the best of San Francisco sights, and residents can take a break from the gym to mix it up with a day-long, action-packed excursion.

Bike the Golden Gate Bridge

Nothing compares to seeing the glory of San Francisco and Alcatraz from the Golden Gate Bridge by bike. Blazing Saddles, a San Francisco bike rental company, suggests crossing the bridge by sidewalk and then coasting into Sausalito, returning later to San Francisco by ferry. Depending on the season and time of day, the designated path for bikes on the bridge alternates, so do your research before heading out.

Sail the Bay

While you can always buy a ticket to get aboard one of the many sailboat tours offered around the San Francisco Bay, navigating the waters yourself is an unforgettable experience. Take sailing classes at a San Francisco Bay sailing school such as the OCSC Sailing School and Club and learn the art of sailboating on one of the country's most magnificent bays. Seasoned sailors can rent a boat by the hour or day and sail to Sausalito, Angel Island, around Alcatraz or about 30 miles offshore for whale watching.

Take a Walking Tour of Alcatraz

Multitaskers love the unique opportunity Alcatraz provides: burn calories traversing the steep hills around the island while experiencing history firsthand. Alcatraz Cruises takes you to the infamous prison island; once you're there, the National Park Service offers a variety of free guided walking tours, nature walks and nighttime excursions, and you can hike and take tours as long as you like. Sturdy walking shoes with grip soles are recommended, as you climb the equivalent of 13 stories just to reach the prison from the base of the island.

Hike the Olompali State Historic Park

Make your hike as easy or strenuous as you want when you hike around Olompali State Historic Park, home to Miwok Indian shelter recreations and Mount Burdell. Visit the Miwok Village for a mild, flat hike, or make your way to Mount Burdell and reach its summit for a strenuous, day-long hike; you are rewarded at the top of the mountain with a truly spectacular view. This state park is good for year-round visits, as its trails are mostly shaded in summer and winters are mild.

Participate in Midnight Skate

Instead of hitting the bar for an evening of drinking or sitting on your rear for two hours in a dark movie theater, experience true San Francisco culture at the Midnight Rollers Friday Night Skate. Hosted by the California Outdoor Rollersports Association, this event takes place every Friday night at 8:45 by the Ferry Plaza, when weather cooperates; the event is open to skaters of all skill levels.
