When it comes to hair loss treatment, the first options that often spring to mind are the more "extreme" approaches, such as hair plugs, hair transplants, or prescription medications. However, some cases of hair loss can be resolved by improving dietary habits and correcting possible vitamin deficiencies. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, those suffering from hair loss, also known as alopecia, may benefit from changes in diet and vitamin supplementation.

B Vitamins

According to HolisticOnline.com, some instances of hair loss are caused by a deficiency in B vitamins. Vitamins such as B3, B-5, B-6 all play important roles in supporting the growth and health of your hair. HolisticOnline.com recommends taking these vitamins three times a day to promote hair growth. In addition, many foods, such as carrots, peas, beans, cauliflower, yeast, bran, nuts and eggs are abundant in B vitamins.

Vitamin E

While not directly related to hair growth, vitamin E is thought to support physical processes that may enable hair growth. HolisticOnline reports that vitamin E increases absorption of oxygen by the scalp, improving circulation and hair growth. This vitamin also is thought to enhance immune function, which also may improve hair growth. According to TLC Cooking.com, vitamin E can be found in foods such as almonds, some cereals, wheat germ oil, and hazelnuts.

Iron

The University of Maryland Medical Center cites iron deficiency as a significant cause of hair loss, and in fact, a lack of iron seems particularly responsible for many cases of women's hair loss. According to a study conducted at Oregon Health Sciences and referenced on TheHairSite.com, 75 percent of 153 women with telogen effluvium, a type of hair loss, were found to have iron deficiency. In addition to supplementation with iron, the University of Maryland recommends eating foods high in iron, such as whole grains and dark leafy vegetables.

Biotin

Biotin is an important vitamin for the overall health and strength of the hair, as well as skin and nails, and is often included in shampoos and other cosmetic products. According to Holisticonline.com, biotin may even prevent hair loss in some men. Biotin can also be found naturally in various foods, such as brewer's yeast, brown rice, bulgur, green peas, lentils, oats, walnuts, soybeans and sunflower seeds.
