Personal hygiene products are available over-the-counter to keep the body clean and smelling fresh. During puberty, hormonal changes can cause increased amounts of sweating and heightened oil production in the skin. At this point, personal hygiene products need to be used continuously through adulthood to prevent body odor and oily hair and skin.

Cleaning the skin with a mild soap is an essential part of a person's day-to-day personal hygiene habits. Daily bathing removes bacteria that reside on the surface of the skin, according to the Mayo Clinic. Pay extra attention to the feet, crotch and armpits while washing because these areas have a tendency to smell. Dry the body thoroughly with a clean towel. Moisture left on the skin can cause micro-organisms to thrive.

For combating bad breath, a toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste are essential. At a minimum, teeth should be brushed twice a day and before bed to prevent bacteria from growing in the mouth at night. Floss between the teeth as well to remove food particles. If not removed, food particles can smell and cause bad breath.

The product can be applied to both the underarm area and soles of the feet to cure body odor. Choose versions that are fragrance free. Deodorants can be applied to the body, but they do not affect the amount of sweat produced. They only mask the odor.

The scalp contains follicles that produce oils and sweat. Shampoo removes oil, dirt and dead skin cells. While shampooing, the scalp should be massaged to remove these items.

Considerations

Mouthwash is another essential personal hygiene product. Not only can it kill bacteria in the mouth and freshen your breath, but it also protects your toothbrush from bacteria. The Medical News Today website recommends that you rinse off your toothbrush with mouthwash before use to get rid of germs.
