Hair growth and loss is most commonly caused by genetics or hormonal imbalances within the body, according to Hair Information, a website dedicated to promoting healthy hair by providing free, accurate information. However, there are some natural home remedies to help re-grow hair and make healthy hair grow faster. These remedies have not been evaluated by the FDA for effectiveness, so you should consult your doctor before starting any home treatments.
Rosemary Essential Oil and Olive Oil
According to Jethro Kloss, author of "Back to Eden: The Classic Guide to Herbal Medicine, Natural Foods, and Home Remedies Since 1939," a mixture of rosemary essential oil and olive oil is regularly used as a folk remedy to help re-grow hair and to make hair grow at a faster rate than usual. To use rosemary essential oil and olive oil for hair growth, make a mixture that is 1 part rosemary essential oil and 10 parts natural olive oil. Apply the mixture to the scalp and gently massage it into the scalp and roots of the hair follicles for 5 minutes. Wrap a towel around your shoulders and leave the mixture on the scalp and hair for 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse the hair with cool water and let it dry naturally without towel-drying or using a hair dryer. This treatment can be used up to two times per day as long as it does not irritate your scalp. Make sure you use all natural olive oil, as olive oil with added ingredients may not be as effective.
Egg Yolks, Coconut Oil and Lime Juice
According to Melanie A. Sachs, author of "Ayurvedic Beauty Care," a mixture of egg yolks, coconut oil and lime juice is commonly used as a folk remedy in Ayurvedic medicine and beauty care to help hair grow. To use egg yolks, coconut oil and lime juice, combine 2 egg yolks, 2 tbsp. pure, raw coconut oil and 1 tbsp. freshly-squeezed lime juice in a small container and shake gently to combine. Gently massage the mixture into the scalp and roots of the hair and leave it on for 20 minutes before rinsing the hair with cool water and shampooing with a gentle cleanser to remove any excess sugar buildup on the scalp. This treatment can be used daily as needed unless irritation occurs. Note that you should use only pure, raw coconut oil for maxium effectiveness, as other coconut oils may contain fillers and unnecessary ingredients, which in some cases can simply irritate the scalp.
Green Tea and Tea Tree Oil
A mixture of brewed green tea and tea tree oil is a common folk remedy used to help hair grow faster and healthier than usual. To use green tea and tea tree oil for hair growth, steep one tea bag in 8 oz. of boiling water for 7 minutes. Discard the tea bag and add 2 tbsp. all-natural tea tree oil and stir to mix. Let the mixture cool to room temperature and pour the mixture over the hair and scalp slowly while massaging the scalp. Leave the mixture in the hair for 10 to 15 minutes while standing in the shower before rinsing your hair with cool water and shampooing with a gentle cleanser. This treatment can be repeated up to three times per day as long as it does not irritate your scalp. Note that you should use only natural tea tree oil, as added ingredients can irritate the skin and reduce effectiveness.
