NuLYTELY, also known as polyethylene glycol, is an electrolyte solution used to clean the colon before intestinal procedures such as colonoscopy and barium X-ray. According to the National Institutes of Health, NuLYTELY cleans the colon by drawing large amounts of water into the colon, resulting in watery diarrhea. NuLYTELY, like any other drug, has side effects.

Gastrointestinal Effects

According to Drugs.com, NuLYTELY may cause nausea, vomiting, mild stomach cramps, gas and rectal irritation. NuLYTELY is a salty solution that may cause nausea and vomiting. Patients can avoid the bad taste by taking a flavored form of NuLYTELY. In rare cases, NuLYTELY may cause serious side effects such as severe abdominal pain and vomiting. Patients should report these serious side effects to the doctor. Patients who fail to have a bowel movement two hours after taking NuLYTELY should consult the doctor. Patients with intestinal diseases such ulcerative colitis, crohns disease, inflammatory bowel disease and intestinal obstruction should also consult the doctor before using NuLYTELY.

Cardiovascular Effects

Drugs.com states that, NuLYTELY may cause abnormal heart rhythms known as arrhythmias. Arrhythmias are more common in patients with previous histories of heart disease. Patients should inform the doctor of any prior histories of heart attack, heart failure, stroke and other heart problems

Hypersensitivity

According to Drugs.com, NuLYTELY may cause allergic reactions in some patients. Patients may experience symptoms such as hives, swelling of the face, lips and tongue, chest tightness, rash and itching. Patients allergic to polyethylene glycol solutions should consult a doctor before using NuLYTELY.
