Things to Do Around San Jose

San Jose is located roughly 60 miles southeast of San Francisco. The mild climate in the area makes it the perfect destination for a variety of indoor and outdoor activities. Residents and visitors alike can enjoy hiking, biking, camping, horseback riding and even ice skating at any time of the year.

Almaden Lake Park

Almaden Lake Park in San Jose is the only one with a sandy beach, volleyball courts, swimming, fishing, horseshoe pits and picnic areas. If you don't want to be in the water, you can rent a kayak or a pedal boat for an excursion on top of the water. The park is connected to Los Alamitos Creek Trail, which is 3.9 miles long and features a fitness course. Numerous other parks and trails are located in and around San Jose.

Rural Hiking Trails

Alum Rock Park is in a more rural setting, northeast of San Jose. It's a great spot for camping and picnics, and you'll be able to enjoy challenging hikes and mountain biking. The trails are natural and allow you to experience all of the native vegetation and animal population of the east valley foothills. And if your hike or your bike takes you to the top of one of a ridge, you'll be rewarded with views of the entire valley.

Horseback Riding

San Jose itself is fairly flat, but coastal hills and open spaces are nearby. If you venture southwest toward Saratoga, you will find a number of farms and stables that cater to the horseback rider. Garrod Farms offers guided horseback rides along country trails with views of the Santa Clara Valley. Riding lessons are available for all ages and skill levels, and pony rides are offered for children under the age of 8.

Ice Sports

The only National Hockey League team in northern California is the San Jose Sharks. The team's practice rink is called Sharks Ice, where you can lace up your skates at any time of the year to enjoy the many activities offered there. In addition to ice skating, you can also use the fitness equipment, take ice skating or curling lessons, or join a hockey or curling league. Special lessons just for kids are also offered.

Golf

The mild weather in San Jose makes it possible to play golf year round. The San Jose Municipal Golf Course is open to the public, and you can play either nine or 18 holes. There is also a driving range and golf shop, as well as a bar and grill, where you can relax after your round of golf. You can also take lessons at the course and enter tournaments, which are held for players of all skill levels..
