It should come as no surprise that excess belly fat is dangerous. A study published in 2008 in the "New England Journal of Medicine" found that excess weight around the abdomen nearly doubled a person's risk of death from a variety of diseases, including cancer, stroke, and heart disease, National Public Radio reported. Home remedies to lose belly fat involve no surgery, no gyms, and no ingestion of pills or supplements. Instead, you must implement changes to your lifestyle.

Replace Your Foods

Instead of eating your normal foods, go through your kitchen, pantry, and refrigerator, and strip away everything high in sodium, fat, and simple sugar. This includes frozen dinners, processed meats, cold cuts, cupcakes, cookies, doughnuts, and candy bars. And don't forget about your liquid calories: Get rid of soft drinks, fruit punch, alcohol, and sweetened teas. Stock up on fresh fruits and vegetables, whole-grain breads, brown rice, oatmeal, low-fat dairy products, lean meats, and beans. Drink water as your main beverage --- at least 10 cups per day.

Eat Breakfast

Taking the time to eat breakfast is important to losing weight. According to Arthritis Today, people who eat breakfast get their metabolism humming, and tend not to consume as many calories during the entire day, so they wind up weighing less than those who don't get the benefits of eating breakfast. As soon as you get up, have something quick like a cup of yogurt with fruit and nuts mixed in, or prepare an egg-white omelet with vegetables.

Consume Small Meals

Eating smaller meals will help keep your calories under control. By spacing these meals out over the course of the day, you will keep your metabolism elevated, feel satisfied, and have high energy levels. Include complex carbohydrates and protein with every meal. Complex carbs are high in fiber, which helps fill you up. Tuna salad on whole -wheat bread with lettuce, tomato, and light mayonnaise is one such meal example. Eat every two the three hours.

Perform Cardio

Cardiovascular exercise is a must if you want to lose belly fat. Walk briskly or run outside. If you have a jump rope, use it. If you have a set of steps, run up and down them. If you get bored easy, mix all of these cardio forms together in your workouts. According to the American College of Sports Medicine, you need to do 60 to 90 minutes of cardio five days a week to lose weight or maintain weight loss. If you do not have time to do it all at once, break it up into shorter sessions.

Lift Your Body

Push-ups, jumping jacks, dips, squat thrusts, lunges, crunches, side bends, and planks are body-resistance exercises that work all of your major muscles, including your abdominals. By doing these exercises, you will not only build metabolically active muscle, but you will also burn calories.

Get Enough Sleep

Sleep deprivation causes your body to become lethargic during the day, and can also sap your mental energy --- and that's the good news. In a 2004 study noted in "USA Today," scientists found that sleep deprivation increases levels of a hunger hormone, and decreases levels of a hormone that makes you feel full. So if you continue to deprive yourself of sleep, you will likely overeat during the day and add fat to your belly. To avoid this, aim for at least seven hours of sleep a night.
