Though commonly applied as tretinoin in prescription creams, the center says over-the-counter skincare creams containing retinol can be just as effective as prescription creams. NeoStrata lists its active ingredient at retinyl acetate. Even though it has a different name, anti-aging skincare expert Paula Begoun says "it's still a retinoid" and rates the cream's efficacy as excellent. She liked its combination of exfoliating retinoid and skin-protecting antioxidants. She also liked its emollient nature, which can help moisturize even very dry skin.

Neutrogena Healthy Skin Anti-Wrinkle Anti-Blemish Cream

Neutrogena's anti-wrinkle cream has a dual-purpose benefit. Its salicylic acid fights pimples and its retinol helps to diminish the appearance of wrinkles. The cream is a perennial favorite among skincare experts, and won "InStyle" magazine's top "Editors' Pick" award in 2005, 2006 and 2007. Reviewing the cream for the magazine, Dr. Elizabeth Tanzi, a dermatologist, said it dries to a sheer finish.

Begoun rates Aveeno's retinol-infused cream as "very good," saying she recommends it for normal skin, as well as slightly dry to slightly oily skin. Besides its moisturizing benefits, it also contains salicylic acid. The acid may help exfoliate your pores to help combat blemishes and reduce clogged pores. The cream comes in an opaque container to keep the retinoid content stable.

Avon's cream is formulated with a proprietary complex of silicone, soybean oil and retinol, reports Begoun. She gives the cream her "very good" grade, saying it can fill in your wrinkles for a smoother appearance and also offers effective sun protection thanks to the inclusion of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide.
