The liver is a large organ located in the upper right part of the abdomen. It has many functions, including detoxifying the blood from chemicals and drugs, processing food, storing energy and killing dangerous germs. Following several vital principles can improve liver function, thus improving overall health.
Pollutants
Pollutants in the air end up being processed by the liver, so it is important to limit the breathing of paint fumes, pesticides, nail polish and other harmful pollutants. People who work in an environment where they are exposed to airborne chemicals on a daily basis should wear an appropriate mask at all times. Odorless chemicals, such as odor-free bug spray, can still harm the liver. Chemicals that end up on the skin should be washed off as soon as possible. Limiting the liver's exposure to pollutants allows it to heal from prior abuse.
Infectious Hepatitis
All forms of hepatitis are hard on the liver. Hepatitis A, B, C, D and E and cytomegalovirus hepatitis can all produce liver damage; the chronic forms of the illnesses are the most serious. Preventive measures to avoid contracting these viruses include avoiding unprotected sex, contaminated needle sticks and contaminated water. If an infectious form of hepatitis is contracted, individuals should seek medical care and carefully follow prescribed guidelines to avoid further liver compromise.
Excessive Drugs
Most drugs are metabolized by the liver. The American Liver Foundation recommends that people not take medicines that are prescribed for someone else, due to a danger to the liver. Acetaminophen, an over-the-counter pain reliever, is also hard on the liver when taken regularly over a period of time. Illicit drugs and overused prescription drugs can also damage the liver. Mixing medication with alcohol heightens the damaging effects of the medicine. Freeing the liver from excessive drugs gives it an opportunity to heal, thus improving liver function.
Excessive Alcohol
The filtering properties of the liver are harmed by excessive alcohol intake. The Hepatitis Foundation International explains that ingesting more than one alcoholic drink per day for women or more than two alcoholic drinks per day for men may be enough to cause liver damage over time. Alcohol intake should be kept to a minimum, and those with a compromised liver due to disease should abstain completely to allow the liver to regenerate and become healthier.
Healthy Diet
A healthy diet can improve liver function. Excessive calories, protein, carbohydrates, salt, vitamin D and vitamin A are all harmful to the liver, while fresh fruits, vegetables and a normal water intake are helpful.
