All states maintain laws that establish termination dates for child support based on the age of a child. The typical standard utilized in most state laws calls for a presumed termination of a child support obligation on a minor's 18th birthday. Exceptions exist that permit the continuation of child support beyond the age of 18, according to the American Bar Association Section of Family Law.

Completion of High School

The most prevalent exception permitting a child support obligation beyond the age of 18 is when the child has yet to complete high school, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. The typical rule requires the payment of child support until the minor graduates from high school or reaches the age of 19.

College Education

On a case-by-case basis, some states maintain laws that permit some sort of support to carry forth beyond the age of 18 to assist a child in obtaining a college education or to complete some sort of trade training program, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.

Disability

A child support obligation can continue beyond 18 in some states if the child is diagnosed with a physical or mental disability, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. The typical requirement is that the child has a disability recognized by the American with Disabilities Act. The extended financial obligation usually exists until that offspring reaches the age of 21.

Agreement

Despite the specific requirements set forth in child support laws in a particular state, you can enter into a voluntary agreement regarding post-minority child support payments. For example, even if your state law does not include a specific provision allowing support payments associated with a college education, you and the other parent can agree to that type of financial obligation.
